Cloudy
April 25, 2009 at 7:40 pm | In Mountains, Skiing | Leave a CommentBreakable crust is unpleasant – breakable goo even worse. Such is April. Headed up into the basin that taught me much of what I know about snow today; there’s still plenty more to learn. Clouds make the world so expansive.
The local ski resort was also on the menu for the afternoon. Snow was significantly better there.

Penguin was bummed that the lifts weren’t spinning.
Guye
April 23, 2009 at 9:07 pm | In Mountains | Leave a CommentNot a line, though there are many lines on Guye Peak. It’s a variant of this view that made the Seattle area different for me from anywhere I’ve ever lived. It’s forty-five minutes from downtown, if traffic is right. In another hour, if you’re speedy, you can be on top of the thing. Alpine terrain at your doorstep….
Photo taken from the top of Summit West ski resort as WSDOT shelled Granite Mountain with a recoilless rifle mounted fifty yards behind me. BOOM!… bang!…. rumblerumblerumble.

Guye Noir?
Relative
April 23, 2009 at 8:44 pm | In Life, Skiing | Leave a CommentThough I’ve barely known them, apparently my great uncles used to love to ski. So did my great grandmother, whom I never met (though our lifetimes overlapped somewhat). Later in life, she liked to paint.

Perhaps some things are timeless.

A mighty fine choice.
We skied from the left hand branch of the Y-shaped couloir. Ulrich’s couloir, our initial goal, follows the flow of water from the summit. We’re still not quite sure how to enter it from the bottom, but we’ve got a much better idea now. Perhaps the best of the myriad couloirs named Cascadian is the wider white gully on the right with the big black block near the bottom.

April’s calendar shot?

Penguin enjoyed his new skis.
Evening
April 12, 2009 at 9:08 pm | In Life | Leave a CommentPerhaps it’s a subconscious salute to stripes, or maybe it was just pretty. Either way, here ’tis.

Some evenings just need to be shared.
Roadtrip
April 12, 2009 at 11:37 am | In Life | Leave a CommentWith a snuggly friend up for the weekend, there was little choice but to strike out on the road for the islands.

Plush accommodations?

Go on a trip with a geologist, and you’re sure to learn a lot.

The moon is up, the snow is roughly right, and it’s a clear and cooling night. I hope someone’s skinning up the lower half of the Wilson right now, intent on scurrying up the Fuhrer Finger. It’s not the right night for me, but it could be the right night for someone. Probably windboard up high, and thin softening corn by morning.
Edit: It would seem that Amar had gotten Gib Chute that afternoon. Looks like I was right about the windboard, but wrong about the ice. The Finger was probably very firm too. April snow showers bring May corn.

Penguin sometimes epitomizes things.

So can Tahoma.
Stars
April 3, 2009 at 11:17 pm | In Uncategorized | Leave a CommentThe clouds decided to take a field trip elsewhere tonight, so there are planets and stars about. Tomorrow’s a bit uncertain, but it’ll certainly dawn clear and cold. Whether we head for the Slot or merely the Sage’s haunt, we’ll have fun in the snow.
Miles tomorrow, many miles, near Davis. Here’s hoping they’re passably pleasant!
